[RP] Character Interpretation Meme
[*shakes fist at Rei and Mandie*

JADE CURTISS
1) Do you agree with fandom interpretation of your character?
HAHAHA GOD NO. Once upon a time, I was pretty vocal about my dislike about certain aspects of it, but now I've more or less devolved into a state of "what are fucks and where do I give them, OK, maybe on Plurk or anywhere but Tumblr, really".
2) Has your muse developed to be different from their canon selves through roleplay?
For Emp!Jade I guess a little! He's subtly more emotional than his canon counterpart, mostly due to having his emotions dragged out of him every so often and him partially giving up in keeping stuff in given certain situations. I think another thing that makes him seem different is the fact that I really love playing around with Empatheias's emotion mechanic, so I don't really hesitate in creating dissonance between what is seen in his expression and what he truly feels.
Honestly, I'm too afraid to change him from how he is in canon but at the same time, this very slow development on his part does work, given that's how he also rolls in canon. Like, from a jerk to slightly less of a jerk by the time the game ends. For Emp!Jade, it's something like, apathetic to less apathetic (LOOK I haven't been logging apathy points for him in the past few months, that is progress).

3) Any unpopular opinions about your muse?
WHERE DO I FUCKING START
I don't know how commonplace this interpretation is, but generally I don't subscribe to the "Jade is a sociopath" and "Jade doesn't have emotions" interpretations. And most people already know how I feel about the topic of you-know-what. Much as certain parts could've been phrased or handled better, I stand by it. I, however, won't die trying to defend it. If people wanna believe otherwise, it's fine, really.

4) Any part of their canon portrayal you dislike?
Can't say there is. But if I were to be a nitpick, I would say his portrayal in some crossover games, I guess? Then again, crossover games don't tend to be the best places to look for character interpretations that go beyond a surface level one. That's not to say I don't love seeing him in crossovers, but most of the time he's the snarky info-dumper Colonel/authority type in them.

5) Is your muse liked or disliked by fandom? Does this affect your portrayal?
Jade I feel is generally liked by the fandom (both on the EN and JP side). Being a sass master and troll that's easy on the eyes does that for you, hahaha. I can't say this affects my portrayal, however. IC is IC, OOC is OOC. Unless of course this is referring to how I handle some of his more troublesome aspects, especially to the uninitiated. In that case, I confess I don't always tend to go all out with Jade's trollish/asshole aspects unless I'm familiar with the mundane and/or I know they're familiar with TOA/Jade's reputation. Like, it's there, but I only go YOLO if that's the case or in very rare circumstances (like that case with Ryn's Ed and burning shit + the Rayfa's boyfriend mess with Dist).
For the fanfic aspect of things, I honestly don't care about how much people like or dislike Jade. I write what I want, and as long as I'm able to keep him IC, I'm all for things.

6) What's your opinion on different interpretations of your muse?
I think they're fascinating! Even the ones I can't agree with or aren't my cup of tea. Depending on the interpretation, they sometimes make interesting fodder for nitpicking and destroying via reviews I'll never publish outside private chat or delicious food for thought if they're something I haven't considered, but may make sense. The latter is my feelings towards the more amoral (I think he is to an extent, but I'm admittedly not playing him on the extreme side of the sliding scale) or less emotional interpretations of Jade (note that this is relative to how I portray him, and he's already emotionally constipated to begin with...). I personally don't see him that way due to all the material I have consumed, but given another background or maybe perspective, it's kind of plausible, so as long as the interpretation doesn't dive off into complete sociopath/psychopath territory.

7) Has your own interpretation changed from when you first began playing the character?
Oh yes! Once upon a time, I was actually in Camp "Jade is a borderline sociopath", until one day, I grew a mind of my own. This was shortly after I finished TOA and lasted about a month or two, I think. TV Tropes was a bad influence on me, as with other things I've read but can't quite remember. But yeah, it all ended when I started doing more research on my own and formulated an interpretation of "Jade has feels, he's just good at hiding them and what we see for most of TOA is a front" based on what I've seen in drama CDs, Tsuioku no Jade, and various side material. Did you know I felt so vindicated by Shiro no Ashita and Short Story of Jade? It was the greatest feeling ever, I tell you.

8) Has new canon material ever forced you to adjust your headcanons?
See #7, though otherwise, not really. The closest thing that comes to mind is the whole "Jade cancels fonic sight post-Eldrant" thing that Miyajima mentioned, but it's not really a big deal and I think most of the fandom had to adjust and I dig that touch to be honest. Also it all depends how canon you consider the anime.

9) What do you wish the author would reveal/had revealed about your muse?
This is both a want and do not want thing since it's sometimes fun to speculate, but I am very curious about Jade's life after he was adopted by the Curtiss family up until pre-game stuff. Like, did he get along with his parents, what kind of commander was he, what kind of struggles did he have with his current mask, that kind of thing. All I have to offer are speculations on that regard, and while they're fun to do, canon confirmation is sometimes nice to have or interesting to hear, ahaha.

10) Why did you decide that they [insert headcanon here]?
[insert headcanon here] = hides emotions
Without side material, it was mostly a product of reading in between the lines, and seeing Jade without Luke's interpretation of the situation to cloud my personal judgment on the matter. I paid extra close attention to sidequests relevant to him (especially the contamination effect one) and that's more or less the vibe I got, which was thankfully corroborated by side material. The more I researched into Jade, the more I became convinced of this matter. Also, the fact that he's a textbook INTJ certainly lends to that vibe, and the corollary of "has difficulty making sense of them sometimes and needs someone to help him with that, aka Peony".

11) Share a headcanon you have not shared.
My NSFW headcanons regarding Jade?? Errrrrrr, this is really silly and I barely have any basis for this but I tend to write him as a person who likes amango tea. Like, he has a pitcher of it in his office and serves it to his guests, that kind of thing. IT'S RIDICULOUS OKAY
